"It’s not clear what Reid was hinting at"

I'd argue it's actually pretty darn clear.

As to the discussion of statues of Confederate leaders, I have to wonder how much exposure you've had to the Lost Cause narrative. Generations of students in this country have been taught that the Civil War was about stuff like "States' Rights," and had *nothing* to do with slavery (conveniently ignoring all the primary sources proving otherwise), and that those Confederate leaders were heroes fighting to protect their homes and lifestyles, not traitors trying to maintain a cruel, inhumane practice.

Regarding the rest, yeah. The idea of hierarchies, of society being organized into in-groups and out-groups, is pretty fundamental to modern conservatism, as shaped by the Culture War they themselves created and perpetuate. Politics isn't about how to run a country - it's a team sport, where you *always* back your team, and all that matters is winning, rules be damned.

100 per cent agreement. They're NeoConfederates. You nailed it.
