When I heard that Cheney and Kinzinger were going to be on the committee, my first thought was, good, they’ll be principled seekers of truth and might elicit the occasional statement against partisan self interest from a Dem witness, which would enhance the credibility of the whole investigation.

But the known facts of this case are so one-sidedly awful, so damning of one side, how do you mount a good faith defense at all? How do you elicit the facts in a way that doesn’t sound awful and one-sided? Because the facts will show Trump to be a mentally ill fascist clown aided and abetted by an army of conspiratorial quislings of similar intellectual, moral, and ethical heft, whose utterly comedic ineptitude was really the only thing standing between us and the end of democracy. How do paint a balanced picture of that? It’s not like discussing the Fed funds rate and its effect on inflation and employment. No, the 1/6 committee’s work will sound partisan in the end because there’s simply no reasonable way for it not to.
