The Biden campaign has generally been savvy. Playing by the rules but taking no s--t along the way, and where possible preparing for the worst (think lawyers being lined up to contest any election results pushback from Republicans: no more Al Gores, please).
However, the campaign should now be twisting knives. Voters are locked in so why continue debates unless debate format can play to Biden's strengths. In brief, the Biden campaign should insist on changed rules to the next two debates. Timed answers with responses, with mics being cut for the opponent. So moderators have full mic control throughout. (Or optionally, have it all on auto-timed if moderators really feel they must wash their hands of it.)
Biden should demand a fully controlled give-and-take debate arrangement since no civility can be expected. Otherwise, the campaign should just walk. After all, it's his campaign that is bargaining from a position of strength. So it should do just that and bargain away. What really is the blowback from walking away from a request to empower moderators to kill off the shitshow option? None. And if he walks, that's just more time for Biden to spend in PA, WI, and other midwestern states.
He doesn't need the debates, Trump does. And that means his campaign (and neither the CPD nor the press) ultimately controls the format. And if the Republicans don't like it: oh, well.
