Rebecca Solnit says "History is wilder than our imagination of it and the unexpected shows up far more regularly than we ever dream." She wrote a whole book about hope! The Trump experience demonstrates that we are well-trained to please people in power, perhaps starting with our parents and definitely enforced by the educational system. Throughout Trump's reign I constantly thought about the story of the Emperor's new clothes. Some of his sycophants continue to play that game, to the detriment of democracy. The arc of moral history is long, said Theodore Parker, as many have reminded us. I like Solnit's version.

Giving up hope is throwing in the towel, admitting defeat. I prefer we maintain belief in the ideals of the nation and bust our tails to achieve it.
