Thank you for giving props to Seth! The so-called "left" and "liberals" are far more in tune with the majority of Americans and so should be considered more as "centrists." Most so-called "conservatives" are so far right that they are off the map entirely. It would help enormously if the press would stop using old labels. Thank you for this well-written piece.

The right-wing illiberal movement is simply fascism and reaction. They want to impose their ancient regime to reinstate the old social and political order of subjugation and exploitation. If the destruction of democracy and America is needed to reestablish their illiberal regime, so be it.

Remember what David Frum said - if conservatives, or more precisely these reactionary factions believe they can't get their way through democracy, they won't give up their ideology; they will give up on democracy. That's why they're all in for voter suppression efforts and likely, in favor of political violence. The totemic gun waving "protests" and outright thuggery by many police departments amped up by Donnie the Demagogue is a preview of what's to come.

Spot on assessment!

This old white guy (who'll be 60 in a couple of months) was late getting to the party, my eyes were finally opened for good in 2004, but now all I can do is look back in horror.

"As the left keeps trying to open the door wider, rightwing illiberals keep trying to push it shut. Liberals and leftists believe everyone is American no matter who they are. The “conservatives,” however, define “American” according to a set of ancient hatreds and bigotries."
